Addiction Recovery Coaching
What is Addiction? Addiction refers to a condition in which an individual engages in some behavior, habit, or act in which they receive some type of reward or response that results in their need or desire to continue engaging that behavior, habit, or act.
For instance, an individual takes a prescription pain killer for pain. The reward being that when taken, the pain killer provides a heightened sense of relief from that pain. The individual equates the pain killer with the relief of pain and begins using it to relive them of other “pains” in which the prescription was not prescribed for. This becomes the individual’s relief from all forms of pain they perceive… physical, mental and in many instances, those caused by mental or emotional factors such as stress or conflict. Before long, the reliance upon the pain killer is daily and when not taken, results in negative physical, mental and/or emotional responses.
In some cases, individuals seek help to break the cycle of addiction. Some individuals attempt to break the addiction on their own. Some individuals require the use of interventions. Some are forced into treatment by order of a judge. Unfortunately, many people simply suffer until they hit rock bottom or even worse, commit suicide or die due to the negative impact on their health.

The Addiction Challenge. When an individual becomes addicted to something, by in large, that addiction is recognized by their brain as being more important that survival itself…even to the point that individuals will risk their lives to continue engaging the addiction.
The reality is that addiction is chronic and the path to being free of the addiction is hard work. To make matters worse, individuals seeking to make the changes are often surrounded by people and situations that can easily trigger their desires to reengage the addiction. The other reality is that although relapse is common when in recovery…it isn’t an absolute. Again, the path to recovery is not easy…it is hard and it will challenge every ounce of an individual’s willpower…but making the behavior and lifestyle changes necessary to overcome addiction can be done! |
